Astir CS, G 102

The Astir CS (club standard) was the first
sailplane designed and serially produced by Grob.
It features composite (fiberglass/resin)
construction, a large wing area, a T-tail and
water ballast. A Standard Class Sailplane, the
large wing area gives good low speed handling
characteristics. The main gear retracts. A
slightly improved version, the CS-77, was
introduced in 1977. The CS-77 has a different
rudder profile fuselage similar to that of the
Speed Astir. The Standard III followed in the
early 1980’s reverting to the higher profile
fuselage and with reduced empty weight and
increased payload. One, flown by R.R. Harris of
the U.S., won the world absolute altitude record
at 14.938 m./ 49.009 ft in 1986. Specifications
are given for the Standard III. ATC, except for
the Standard II which is EXP.

There are actually 10 variants of the Astir and originally was not designated G-102 until after the production of the G-103 Twin Astir. The models are: Astir CS / Astir CS 77 / Astir CS Jeans / Standard Astir II / Club Astir II / G102 Standard Astir III / G102 Club Astir III / G102 Club Astir IIIb. It’s unknow the total built of each model but the first Astir CS and CS 77 are most common. The Astir CS has underwing camber that allows great light thermal performance and easy handling. A great glider for the pilot that needs to build seat time.
